This is related with the subtitle file’s encoding.
When the app opens a subtitle file, at first, it tries UTF-8 encoding.
If it fails, the app tries again with the encoding related with your phone’s language setting.
If your phone’s language is set at Spanish, it tries Spanish encoding.
Now if your subtitle file’s encoding is not neither UTF-8 nor Spanish encoding, then characters can be broken.
Since UTF-8 encoding works always, you may change your file’s encoding to UTF-8, then try the app again.
To change your file’s encoding to UTF-8,
Open the file from notepad of your PC.
Check all characters are okay. (if you see broken characters there, it can’t help…)
Then execute File(F) -> Save As(A) menu.
Then a window you can set a new name will pop.
At the bottom(left of save button) of the window, there is a encoding button.
Open it and select UTF-8,
Save a new file, and upload it to the app again.
Now you would see all subtitle characters without any problem.
The subtitle characters look broken.

1. When you save a link for a TED video, the app will automatically download both English and the translation language’s subtitles simultaneously.
For example, if your translation for TED is set at Spanish, the app will automatically download both English and Spanish subtitles.
2. Or you can download any subtitles in any languages later whenever you want(if available).
At first you need to open the ‘Subtitle setup page’.
You can do this by either
– from TED Talks list, execute ‘study’ menu at the right end of each lists. Once TED details page is open, execute ‘Setup-Subtitle’ menu.
– or from the ‘Currently playing’ page, execute the ‘Setup subtitle’ menu which consists of ‘SUB’ text under gear shape. If audio is playing, you will see the menu under the bottom. If video is playing, you will need to make the menu shown first by touching the video screen. (the menus will toggles ‘show’ and ‘hide’ whenever you touch the video screen.
Once the the ‘Subtitle setup page’ is opened,
there is the menu, ‘Get More Subtitles…’. Execute the menu and you will get a lot more subtitles as you want. Once you download new subtitle, you can assign it as main or sub subtitle newly.
